What if every long journey in the city was cut to 15 minutes?
The Trend
Cities are being redesigned so that everything people need sits within a short walk, cycle or ride of home, and electric micromobility keeps stretching how far 15 minutes reaches. Paris is the best known example, but Barcelona has its Superblocks, Portland aims for 90 percent of residents in 20-minute neighborhoods, and Shanghai wrote the 15-minute community life circle into its master plan. In the future normal, cities where people can move freely will thrive while those where mobility is constrained will struggle.
The Instigator
The Dutch e-bike maker built an ad in which a sports car slowly melts away to reveal an electric bicycle, closing with the line “Time to ride the future.” French advertising regulators banned it on the grounds that it creates a climate of anxiety, simultaneously validating and censoring the point it was making. VanMoof is one player in a much broader micromobility shift away from cars toward bikes, scooters and microvehicles, both shared and privately owned.
Imagining The Future Normal
Are we designing for cities of people, or data points?
How do we find the right balance between algorithmic optimization and human-centered design? As AI becomes prevalent, it’s easy to let the data dictate decisions without considering people’s lived experiences: human interaction, well-being, and happiness. As the data gets more detailed, engaging real people will matter more and more.
How will AI-dependent cities insulate themselves against cyber attacks?
As cities become more and more dependent on AI and digital networks for basic operations (traffic control, utilities, emergency responses), it’s critical that they can operate even if hit by outages or hacks. This highlights the need for resilient design where some analog options or manual override capabilities continue to exist.
How can we avoid inadvertently creating restrictive “gated communities”?
Urban planners must examine whether their 15-minute city efforts are inclusive, or if they’re just making bubbles of convenience for the affluent. As AI enables more data-driven decision-making, urban algorithms will need to be adjusted for equity as well as efficiency, identifying underserved areas and incentivizing the deployment of resources there too.
