Amnesty International Issues Travel Advisory For USA
"Be wary of the ubiquity of firearms among the population." This is just one of the warnings that are included in a new Amnesty International travel advisory issued for any travelers considering coming to the US. Any global traveler is familiar with these alerts but they are rarely issued for travelers to so-called "first world" countries. Reading the full alert, though, it's hard to deny that America definitely earned this one.
Study Examines the Ridiculousness of Spoiler Culture
How far should writers go to avoid spoilers? This is the question a new study examines, while looking at the growing ridiculousness with which we are policing the potential for spoilers in media. As people continually time shift shows or get into longer running TV series years after they begin, what responsibility should the cast and crew hold on social media to avoid sharing spoilers for shows that may have ended months or years ago? And perhaps most importantly, might this fear of accidentally encountering (or sharing) a spoiler keep people from discussing entertainment in the first place?
Finnish Nightmares and Getting Inside Scandinavian Culture
This book of unusual cartoons officially releases next week, but I thought it fitting to share in this week's newsletter because it reminded me of just how good comedians and artists are at shining a spotlight on reality. This book about the notoriously introverted Finns is no exception and seems like it may be a welcome distraction.
