As technology gets more human, there is a growing reality that humans are becoming attached to their technology much like they may become attached to a beloved pet. In theory, this is better ... I mean at least the tech is sure to outlive you, right? But when the companies creating that tech go out of business, it can create some real emotional distress - even leading some to write eulogies for their dying gadgets. Thankfully, lovers of Anki's tiny robot toys won't have to experience this same trauma thanks to this announcement that a new owner will come in and keep Anki's bots alive. Tech, it seems, really has become part of the family.

The Hidden Industry California's New Privacy Laws May Inspire

I know it's tempting to skip a story about privacy laws, and I don't blame you but bear with me on this one. I try not to write about obtuse legislation, but this one was interesting simply because of how far it goes to force companies to hand the data they have been collecting back to the users. I believe this is going to give rise to an growing industry of "data wallet" style products and services to help us all make sense of this Data Abundance (I named this one of my megatrends) and to make it more useful in our daily lives as currency we can trade for discounts, premium service and better function.

What Ad Spending From The Past Decade Can Teach Us

This week AdAge released a compilation of the brands that spend the most on advertising from a decade ago versus the brands spending the most now. Two things stood out to me. Firstly, two of the top three were insurance companies (Geico and Progressive). It likely speaks to how profitable the insurance industry has become. The second is just how far Amazon has risen, from not being on the list to being the current #2. Advertising now seems to be part of their growth plan while clearly it wasn't before.
