I can't resist a good underdog story and this certainly qualifies as a Scottish whiskey named Lidl has won the top prize at this year's World Whiskies Awards. In a world where too many awards are given based on ulterior motives or for political reasons, it's nice to see a winner that could only have been based on taste.
Can Tech & "On-Demand Grandkids" Help Cure Loneliness?
Imagine if you could order companionship as easily as you can summon a driver. A tool called Join Papa joins college students with seniors to offer a companion who can help with errands or just offer someone to talk to. It's one of a range of new tools and uses of technology that are coming up to fight loneliness in all its forms.
A few weeks ago I featured a story about a Japanese company that is selling "holographic wives." In that case, the vision was to replace real humans with an always attentive companion instead. As loneliness continues to rise and people seek out ways to connect to one another in deeper ways, the need for tech to help develop solutions to help reduce loneliness will lead to lots of new ideas.
Some will be more human and create wonderful ways to connect generations and bring people together like Join Papa. Others will awkwardly push the limits of how people relate to technology.
